The Inaugural HKU-Boase Cohen & Collins Criminal Law Lecture (20 Jan 2017) (video available)

The Faculty of Law at The University of Hong Kong is delighted to announce the inaugural HKU-Boase Cohen & Collins Lecture Series in Criminal Law was delivered by award-winning international barrister Clare Montgomery QC on Friday, 20 January 2017, at the HKU’s Centennial Campus.

     Ms. Montgomery, of Matrix Chambers in London, is a barrister of international renown and, among the many accolades that have come her way, she has twice been named Crime Silk of the Year in the Chambers & Partners Bar Awards as well as Crime Silk of the Year in the inaugural Legal 500 Awards.

     She spoke about “Joint Enterprise” – a topic which has been in the news due to a landmark ruling by the UK’s Supreme Court and Privy Council in early 2016 and its historic connection with Hong Kong.  She commented on the Court of Final Appeal's December 2016 decision in HKSAR v Chan Kam Shing, which decided not to follow the UK's landmark ruling.  Her lecture can be viewed below.

Most corporations make decisions according to “weighted majority rule” -- shareholders’ votes are weighted by the proportion of shares they hold, and the majority gets its way.  One problem with this mechanism is that it cannot incorporate intensity of preference.  In this lecture, Professor Maskin explores alternatives to weighted majority rule.

      Professor Eric Maskin is Adams University Professor at Harvard and a member of the AIIFL Academic Advisory Board.  He received the 2007 Nobel Prize in Economics (with L. Hurwicz and R. Myerson) for laying the foundations of mechanism design theory.  He also has made contributions to game theory, contract theory, social choice theory, political economy, and other areas of economics.  He received his A.B. and PhD from Harvard and was a postdoctoral fellow at Jesus College, Cambridge University.  He was a faculty member at MIT from 1977-1984, Harvard from 1985-2000, and the Institute for Advanced Study from 2000-2011.  He rejoined the Harvard faculty in 2012.

THE HOCHELAGA LECTURES 2014

The lectures and seminar will all run from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm at the Academic Conference Room, 11th Floor, Cheng Yu Tung Tower. There will be refreshments after Lecture I.

About the lectures: Professor Zeller will explore the extent to which “good faith” is a settled national and international concept that is capable of definition. He will first outline the sources of “good faith” in national and international law. He will then examine how the term “good faith” is used in contract law as reflected in domestic instruments and the judgments of US, UK, German, and Australian courts, as well as in international instruments such as the United Nations Convention on Contracts

for the International Sale of Goods (CISG) and the UNIDROIT Principles of International Commercial Contracts. Through such analysis, Professor Zeller will assess whether diversity in the use of the term “good faith” has made the concept so amorphous that it has lost all practical utility for the purposes of contract law.

About the speaker: In addition to teaching at the University of Western Australia, Professor Zeller is Adjunct Professor at Murdoch University in Perth; Visiting Professor at the Institut für Anwaltsrecht of the Humboldt University in Berlin; and Visiting Professor at the Stetson Law School in Florida. His areas of expertise are international trade law, international arbitration, conflict of laws, and maritime law. He has published widely on CISG, arbitration law, the harmonisation of contract law, and carbon trading.
